Public order in the country is gradually improving

Caretaker Home Minister Lt. General (retd.) M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said law and order in the country had gradually improved.

“Public order in the country is gradually improving, although the situation is currently somewhat more difficult as different professional groups continue to agitate on different issues,” he said.

The adviser said this when French Ambassador to Bangladesh Marie Masdupuy visited him in his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

During the teleconference, various aspects were also discussed, including the current law and order situation, police reforms and the confiscation of illegal weapons.

Responding to concerns over arms looting that occurred at various police stations across the country following the resignation of the previous government led by Sheikh Hasina, the Interior Minister said, “The government will soon launch a special operation to recover the illegal weapons.”

During the meeting, the Advisor mentioned the illegality and misuse of some licensed weapons issued during the rule of the previous government and that necessary action is being taken in this regard.

On the issue of reform of the police department, General M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that the police officers are often under pressure while performing their duties as they do not have enough time for rest.

“We have decided in principle to restructure the police force… but it is still in the initial phase,” he said. “In addition to the police, gradual initiatives are being taken to reform other forces of the Interior Ministry,” he added.

Among those present at the meeting were senior officials from the Ministry of Interior and Deputy Head of Mission Guillaume AUDREN de KERDREL from the French Embassy in Dhaka.
