Rahul Gandhi in India Today’s MOTN poll on caste census: No power can stop it

Congressman Rahul Gandhi on Sunday reiterated his demand for a nationwide caste census, citing data from India Today’s Mood of the Nation (MOTN) survey.

In a tweet, Rahul Gandhi said, “Modiji, if you are thinking of stopping the caste census, you are dreaming – no power can stop it now. India’s order has come – soon 90 percent of Indians will support and demand a caste census. Implement the order now or you will see the next Prime Minister doing it.”

The opposition leader retweeted a post from the Congress social media account citing a report from the MOTN poll in August. According to the poll, 74 percent of respondents were in favour of a caste census, up from 59 percent in February when the poll was last conducted.

The August 2024 edition of India Today’s Mood of the Nation, a biannual pan-India poll, was conducted by CVoter between July 15, 2024 and August 10, 2024. The poll surveyed 40,591 respondents across all 543 Lok Sabha segments in the country. Another 95,872 interviews from CVoter’s regular weekly tracker were also analyzed to identify long-term trends in vote and seat shares. Rahul Gandhi was a staunch advocate of a nationwide caste censusa promise that was also included in the Congress manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections this year.

During the election campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi promised that if his party was voted to power, he would conduct a nationwide socio-economic caste census to list the castes, sub-castes and their socio-economic conditions.

Rahul Gandhi promises to conduct a financial and institutional survey after the caste census to determine the distribution of wealth among the country’s population – a plan that is meeting with strong opposition from the ruling BJP.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had claimed that the Congress was distributing the country’s wealth to “infiltrators” and “those who have more children”.
