“Raw-dogging” during a flight can be fatal

If you have never heard of raw dogging on a flight, consider yourself lucky. Unfortunately, this post is about exactly that, so either turn back or buckle upInstead of listening to music, reading a book or watch a movie during a flightSome passengers prefer to skip all of that and just watch the flight map until they land. More extreme raw doggers also skip snacks, drinks and toilet breaks. As the BBC reportsDoctors say this can also be fatal:

They’re idiots. A digital detox might do you good, but anything else goes against medical advice. The risk of long-haul flights is that you run the risk of dehydration. If you don’t move, you run the risk of deep vein thrombosis, which is made worse by dehydration. Not going to the bathroom is a bit stupid. If you need to go to the bathroom, you need to go to the bathroom.

If you refuse to urinate long enough, it will become painful and associated with an increased risk of kidney stones and possibly urinary tract infections, but it’s unlikely anyone can hold it back long enough to burst their bladder. Deep vein thrombosisis far more risky. It occurs when one or more blood clots form in the deep veins, most commonly in the legs.

Sometimes DVT occurs without symptoms, but it can also cause pain and swelling. If these clots break off, they can travel to your lungs and block blood flow. This is called a pulmonary embolism. This too can be fatal. And although passengers who go without eating during a flight are at higher risk of DVT, it can happen to anyone who remains inactive for a long period of time. If you experience sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that gets worse when you cough or take a deep breath, a rapid pulse or breathing, or coughing up blood, seek medical attention immediately. It could very well save your life.

For those who like less extreme forms of raw dogging, that’s probably fine. A little weird, but fine. But let’s just call it what it is. You’re meditating. Or at least trying to.
