Red Sox’s Danny Jansen ready to make ‘cool’ history

BOSTON – There has been much speculation that “history will be made” when the Red Sox resume their rain-shortened game against the Blue Jays on Monday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora reaffirmed Sunday that he plans to use catcher Danny Jansen in Monday’s game against Toronto, which resumes on Monday. Jansen, whom Boston acquired from the Blue Jays on July 27, will be the first major league player to start for both teams in the same game.

“Because of all the pressure I’ve received from my colleagues (the media), I felt obligated to let (Jansen) play tomorrow,” Cora said. “But it works out because Reese McGuire is the catcher and Connor Wong will be the catcher in the second game.”

Jansen was actually batting for Toronto on June 26 when the Red Sox-Blue Jays game here at Fenway Park was halted in the second inning due to heavy rain. He was trailing 1-0 against Boston starter Kutter Crawford.

The game is scheduled to resume on Monday at 14:05.

However, with the Red Sox 4 ½ games behind the Twins in the battle for the final wildcard spot and 33 regular-season games still to play, Jansen is more focused on the bigger picture.

“I’m just going to put my head down and play,” he said. “That’s definitely a cool thing. But at the end of the day, I want to win a ballgame and do everything I can to prepare for that. But the goal is to make your mark on the game in any way I can.”

“If that were the case for me, that would be cool.”
