The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn real estate market is the fourth most popular in the country for people searching online for their next home, according to a new report from California-based Realtor.com.

The new report uses Realtor.com Online traffic data and views per property to assess popularity in the metropolitan area.

The Detroit metropolitan area recorded a traffic share of 1.3 percent and 1.2 views per property compared to the rest of the country.

“Detroit ranks fourth and is the largest market on our list with a population of over 4 million people,” said Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com. “It’s affordable, with a median asking price of $252,000 last year.”

Columbus, Ohio, took first place with a traffic share of 0.9 percent and 2.4 views per property. Knoxville, Tennessee, came in second with 0.5 percent and 1.7, and the combined markets of Louisville, Kentucky, and Jefferson County, Indiana, came in third with 0.5 percent and 1.5.

Pittsburgh; Portland-South Portland, Me.; Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater; Charleston-North Charleston, SC; Hartford-East Hartford-Middletown, Conn.; and Asheville, NC round out the top 10.

“With their mix of affordability and growing supply, these markets have been sought out by online home buyers, earning them a spot in our ranking of most popular markets,” says Hale. “Notably, these 10 metropolitan areas are large enough to attract those making the difficult decision to move to a new area, but also still small and affordable enough to retain local home buyers.

“With lower housing costs and a larger number of homes for sale, these second-largest cities in the South, Midwest and Northeast are likely to continue to attract new residents from around the world.”
