Report: Geno Smith wants a new contract in Seattle

After an unexpectedly strong 2022 season, Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith signed a three-year contract. It was and is a one-year contract that gives the team the opportunity to really get going again after the first two seasons.

Smith, who is entering his third season as a starter, apparently wants more security.

Over USA TodayNFL Media’s Mike Garafolo recently stated in a podcast appearance that Smith has raised the issue of a new dealThe real question is whether the team would do it.

The team honestly has no reason to do that. He signed the contract at a time when he could have signed anywhere. The Seahawks probably made him the best offer – with a base value of $75 million over three years.

It could be as simple as Geno looking for more guarantees. Currently, the Seahawks could get away with just $13.5 million in cap space after 2024.

He might also want more money. Given the current market, $25 million for experienced starters puts him in the middle of the pack and close to last.

The Seahawks also have Sam Howell, who is entering the third year of his rookie contract. The Seahawks could decide to move from Smith to Howell or perhaps someone else after this season. That fact gives Smith reason to want more confidence that he will stay with the team.

Again, the Seahawks have no reason to do this. Unless they conclude from their limited experience with Howell that he will never be the right fit, there is no reason to sign Smith beyond 2024, especially with a new coaching staff.
