Reuters journalist missing after attack on hotel in Ukraine

A member of the Reuters news agency team was reported missing and two others were seriously injured in an attack on a hotel in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk.

A team of six Reuters journalists were staying at the hotel, Reuters said in a statement.

“One of our colleagues is missing, two others have been taken to hospital for treatment,” Reuters added.

The Reuters statement said the other three journalists were missing and added: “We are urgently seeking more information, cooperating with the authorities in Kramatorsk and supporting our colleagues and their families. As soon as we have more information, we will inform you.”

Reuters has not yet named its team.

Regional officials said the body of a British national, believed to be a journalist, had been recovered from the rubble and four other journalists of German, Latvian, Ukrainian and US nationality had been injured.

The attack hit the Sapphire Hotel at around 10:35 p.m. local time. The hotel was regularly used by media and aid workers as a base for their reporting in the region.

According to Ukraine, 15 civilians were killed in Russian attacks in the last 24 hours.

Vadym Filashkin, the governor of the Donetsk region, said by telegram on Sunday that authorities and rescue workers were on site.

“Debris clearance and rescue operations are underway,” he said, adding: “Seventeen private houses, six high-rise buildings, three businesses, an administrative building and a cafe were damaged.”

Reuters said the Russian Defense Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

Footage shared on X by VOA sister station Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty shows rescue workers recovering at least one body from the rubble, as well as damage to the hotel and surrounding buildings.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 15 journalists covering the war in Ukraine have been killed since Russia’s large-scale invasion in February 2022.

Six of them were foreign correspondents, including Fox News video journalist Pierre Zakrzewski and American filmmaker Brent Renaud.
