Review of “Into The Unbeing: Part One #3”

After reading the best second issue of the year, Into The Unbebeing: Part One returns this week with its third issue. A mixture of body horror meets Magic School Bus; this new series is in full swing. A group of scientists have found something impossible: a giant humanoid, and now they are inside to find out what it hides, but also to escape it!

The adventure continues in Into The Unbebeing: Part One #3, in which three climate scientists continue to plumb the depths of a giant corpse. They seem to be stuck, and the only way out is down, as they push off what looks like a giant sarcophagus lined with teeth. The issue picks up where we left off, and the danger levels only increase by the end of the issue.

The horror of this issue is heightened when it is revealed that there are creatures inside the giant. The series was already scary by magnifying familiar human innards, but now the characters must contend with creepy crawlies.

The framing and focus of this issue is pretty strong. At the beginning, one of the scientists is seen working on a beetle, pinning it to a board. Zac Thompson’s great captions draw our attention to their size, and they also carry the world on their backs. Cut to our main characters, as small as beetles inside a giant carcass, and you get what I mean. Another theme of the issue is the dead weight of one of the remaining scientists, which ties into the cliffhanger’s raising of the stakes.

Hayden Sherman never ceases to amaze with his impressive layout design and courage to try new things. At one point you have to turn the entire comic on its side to see the whole picture. The bone-shaped page edges are just one of many nice details that make the reading experience a real treat.

One new addition to this issue is a flashback that helps define one of the main characters. This is great, as the series felt a little one-sided with this ensemble cast. The scene also helps convey what the characters are going through, as if they were on a river pushing their canoe too fast, and there was no way to escape danger and death.

I have a few criticisms of this issue, although it shouldn’t be a problem for most people. The “data page” doesn’t work quite as well as it did in the last edition. Also, the colors sometimes look too muddy and dark for their purpose.

Honestly, it’s a good thing this is “Part One” because if I could, I would read 100 copies of this book. Into The Unbebeing: Part One is one of the most unique and terrifying horror comics of this century.

The horror factor goes up to eleven in this edition

Fantastic layout designs throughout

The premise remains excellent

The data page doesn’t really work… but maybe it’s just me

The color can sometimes be too dark and muddy
