Review: The Prodigy No. 4

“The Prodigy” – Book Four
Author and artist: Juni Ba
Colorist: Chris O’Halloran
Author: Aditya Bidikar

The Prodigy #4 shows the struggles of the young, murderous Robin. It is quickly becoming a piece of compelling comic media that is simultaneously unique, timelessly classic, and simply the perfect look at one of the newest but most important members of the Bat-Family. This story, as I said in my review of the previous issue, is not only the defining story for Damian Wayne’s backstory. After the strength of this fourth chapter, I would say this could become the strongest interpretation of Damian, similar to Batman: Year One for his dear father.

This issue focuses on his uncertain relationship with his mother. The issue perfectly describes his origins and the heated dynamic between his parents, but not in a way that creates unnecessary repetition. We’re comic readers, we know what’s going on with these characters. It’s just the flowery, poetic way Damian speaks (and has always spoken) that makes the lighthearted, unlikely romance between Talia and the Bat so gripping. It’s then paired with great suspense and a vision of Ra’s at his worst to really feel swept up in this story.

Every part of The child prodigy So far it’s been a treat for the senses, but this issue takes it to the next level. The shift into flashback, which looks like sandblasted tapestries, makes the whole issue burst with imagination and depth. It perfectly maintains the feeling that Damian’s whole story has been retold to us as an epic quest. And all the while, O’Halloran consistently uses that neon lime green for the grim scenes of Damian’s grandfather and the dark magic deep beneath Nanda Parbat.

Diploma

The Prodigy #4 is a comic book treat for every reader. To give them a thrilling quest. The definitive look at Damian Wayne. And a symphony for the eyes, all in a single issue. This reviewer is once again blown away by the stories!
