Rings of Power co-showrunner reveals new locations to be explored in Season 2

The Rings of Power is a television series based on the works of JRR Tolkien and includes material from the appendices of the popular The Lord of the Rings, serves as a prequel to Peter Jackson’s trilogies. The Rings of Power Set thousands of years before the original series, it follows the major events of the Second Age of Middle-earth, and Season 2 further expands the world.

The Rings of Power Season 2 is almost ready for its Prime Video premiere after a long wait. The series’ co-showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne gave a teaser in an interview with ScreenRant that the upcoming Season 2 will introduce brand new locations in Middle Earth. Season 1 of the hit series featured new key locations from JRR Tolkien’s world, such as the island of Númenor, Khazad-dûm (later known as Moria) and the elven kingdom of Lindon), and Season 2 will further explore the “infinite” map.

McKay and executive producer Lindsey Weber explained that Season 2 will continue the journey through Middle Earth, including the Dark Forest, where Shelob the giant spider lives, as well as the highly anticipated Barrows and Rhûn. They also hinted that there will be more locations in the lands of Mordon, but that he couldn’t remember them all, as Season 2’s 33-week production was very extensive.

Where does Kankra live, in the Black Forest?“, McKay teased. “Well, Mordor has many scary places and especially now that the sun has set, evil will simply take hold. My goodness, where did we even film that? I can’t remember, we spent eight or nine months filming in forests all over the UK, so I can’t even remember exactly where our horse rides through.”

The map of Middle Earth is endless and hopefully there is a new, strange and wonderful place around every corner.

Weber added that the locations were “inspiring” and that the characters in Season 2 would spend a lot of time wandering around the woods and encountering new “scary” creatures. “But It’s been very inspiring to be here in the amazing, old, ancient woods. Our characters are running around in the woods a lot this season, at night, just like in the books, and encountering some very scary creatures.. So we got to experience it with them in the forest at night, which was exciting, and our actors handled it brilliantly.”

McKay hinted that Middle Earth will be explored further: “There are more places we will visit.” We go to the Barrow Downs a little later in the season. Apparently they travel in Rhûn. God, where else are we going to go? We’ll find a community of stewards over there in the desert that’s yet to come. The map of Middle Earth is infinite and hopefully there is a new, strange and wonderful place around every corner.”

The Rings of Power attempts to expand on the locations omitted in Peter Jackson’s adaptation

The Lord of the Rings The universe benefited from six feature films directed by Peter Jackson. He directed the original trilogy and returned to Middle Earth with the prequel The Hobbitfollows the hobbit Bilbo Baggins and his adventure with the wizard Gandalf the Grey as he joins the thirteen dwarves to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dreaded, chaos-bringing dragon Smaug. His two trilogies brought the work of Tolkien to life, as well as some of his most famous locations.

Still, there were many places that didn’t make it to the screen. The omissions were largely due to the need to compress Tolkien’s vast universe into a world suitable for the series, but with a larger platform. The Rings of Power could focus on the areas left out in the films. For example, the debut of the Barrowdowns, explored in Tolkien’s novels, as well as the introduction of fan-favorite book character Tom Bombadil (portrayed by Rory Kinnear) will further expand the Tolkien lore and give the Prime Video show the opportunity to not only build on an already impressive universe, but also explore the possibilities left out, and the introduction of Mount Doom was one such example.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power The first three episodes of the second season will air on Prime Video on August 29th, with new episodes released weekly on Thursdays thereafter.
