Rite Aid closes all stores in Michigan

Rite Aid plans to close all 170 remaining stores in Michigan as the company exits the state entirely.

A Rite Aid spokesperson confirmed Wednesday, August 14, that the bankruptcy filings call for all Michigan stores to close. The latest document, filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on August 9, lists 32 stores to close in Michigan and Ohio.

The US pharmacy chain had already told MLive in June that it had made the “difficult but necessary business decision” to close all stores in Michigan and nearly all stores in Ohio. Rite Aid then attempted to recall the email, with a spokesperson saying they would need to update the statement.

Since then, dozens of stores in Michigan and Ohio have filed separate bankruptcy petitions as signs announcing “Store Closing” have appeared across the state.

Rite Aid confirmed that the stores will close by the end of September. It was not initially known how many employees would be affected.

Rite Aid also expects to lay off 191 employees when the company permanently closes its Waterford distribution center on August 16.

Rite Aid customers should inquire about where their prescriptions will be transferred before their pharmacy closes. If that location is not an option for them, customers can choose another pharmacy and ask Rite Aid to transfer their prescriptions there.

Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in October 2023 as it faced declining sales and opioid-related lawsuits. Since then, the pharmacy has reportedly closed more than 520 stores nationwide, not including the recent spate of closures in Michigan and Ohio.

In 2022, Rite Aid agreed to a $30 million settlement to resolve lawsuits accusing the pharmacy of contributing to the opioid crisis. The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit in March accusing Rite Aid of knowingly writing “at least hundreds of thousands of illegal prescriptions.” The Justice Department reportedly agreed to a “brief pause” on its lawsuit after Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy.

Since last fall, Rite Aid has announced a total of 232 stores in Michigan will close.
