RV dealer Camping World defies California county order to take down giant American flag

A major RV dealer is fighting for the right to fly a giant American flag in a Northern California county.

Camping World RV Sales in San Joaquin County, like many of the company’s other 250 locations, flies a giant American flag over its property. This was stopped in April when the county ordered the dealership to remove the flag due to safety concerns and lack of permits, Fox40 reports.

“Camping World’s flagpole was erected without a building permit or planning approval, so they are in discussions with the building control authority,” the district said in a statement to the local sales outlet.

The county believes the flagpole could be dangerous due to its proximity to property lines and the highway, but Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis disagreed and ordered the flag to be put back in that spot on Monday.

“If we felt like we were putting people in danger or causing problems with air travel, which would be absolutely not OK, then I wouldn’t do it,” Lemonis told FOX40.

Lemonis argued that the flagpole is secure and anchored deep in the ground, and if it were a flag other than the American one, he would have no problem taking it down while the permitting issues are resolved. However, he is determined to keep the American flag up no matter what.

“It symbolizes how we feel about this country. A lot of veterans work for us and a lot of them shop with us,” Lemonis told Fox40. “I happen to be an immigrant. I was lucky enough to be able to come to this country and become a citizen and I’m grateful for that. It’s been a part of my life since I was a little kid in Miami, Florida, where we had the biggest flagpole in Miami at our car dealership.”

The district announced that Camping World has now applied for a building permit for the flagpole, which is currently being reviewed.
