The San Francisco Giants decided to send relief pitcher Camilo Doval to the minor leagues on Friday. Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reported on the surprising move.
Doval’s demotion came after a poor performance on the mound in the 9-5 win in the final road game of the series against the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
Doval, 27, got a chance to defeat the Nationals in the ninth inning when the Giants had a three-run lead. However, Doval struggled with his position and allowed two walks before allowing a home run by Luis Garcia Jr. that tied the game and ultimately sent the game into overtime.
It was the fifth blown save of the 2024 MLB season for Doval, who has struggled to maintain the form he had during his 2023 All-Star season. In 46 appearances on the mound this season, Doval has posted a 4.70 ERA, 3.93 FIP and 1.614 WHIP.
In addition, Doval’s walk rate increased from 9.3 percent in 2023 to 14.3 percent this year.
Fans have had mixed reactions to Doval’s foray into the minor leagues, with many believing it will turn out well for both the pitcher and the Giants.
“I mean, it’s about time. He clearly has something to work through.”
“I feel like he’s caught up in his own head. Sending him back to AAA can take the pressure off. He can slow down… work on his skills, and then he’ll be ready when the team needs him…”
“Relegating him to a supporting role would have made sense, but sending him back is blasphemy.”
“Hopefully Doval can regain his confidence. Ryan Walker is the new closer”
“Enough time to sort things out and come back, I guess. I wonder if there are any realistic trade offers at this point that will be regretted.”
“It’s all in his head. I hope he gets back on his feet.”
