Schwarber and Stubbs lead Phillies to victory against the Royals – Trentonian

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Kyle Schwarber had two hits and three RBIs and Garrett Stubbs had a personal-best four hits to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to an 11-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

After Garrett Stubbs opened the third inning with a triple to the right corner, Schwarber hit a double to right-center field. Alec Bohm’s two-out hit scored Schwarber and gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Schwarber added more RBIs with a bases-loaded grounder in the fourth inning and a single that capped a three-run sixth inning.

Philadelphia scored five in the eighth inning, highlighted by Bohm’s two-run single and Nick Castellanos’ two-run homer, his 17th of the season.

Needing a home run to complete the cycle, Stubbs hit a single in the eighth inning and was hit by a pitch in the ninth.

“I’ve never been mad when I hit a single, but I was definitely trying to hit a home run,” Stubbs said. “(Today) was as good as you can feel. Obviously scoring 11 runs and getting that slow going in the last couple innings helped us.”

Kolby Allard (2-0) played five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and five strikeouts.

“The changeup was really good today,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “The first two guys come in in the first inning and he works his way out of there. That tells me something about him.”

Seth Lugo (14-8) of Kansas City allowed six runs and eleven hits.

“There was a lot of contact today, so you have to give them credit,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “But it was a very unfortunate run for Seth because a lot of that contact wasn’t hard.”

Lugo has allowed at least four runs in five of his last seven starts.

“It’s been a streak of bad luck,” Quatraro said. “But he’s throwing the ball well.”

The Phillies scored 7 of 14 runs with runners in scoring position.

“It was pretty frustrating,” Lugo said. “I felt like I was hitting shots. I would have liked a little more swing and misses, but this is a good lineup.”

After hitting a season-high 18 in an 11-2 win on Saturday, the Phillies hit 16 and allowed 45 hits on Sunday while defeating the Royals 26-12 to win two games in the three-game series.

“We’ve found our ways again,” Thomson said. “Our at-bats have been really good throughout the series.”

Bobby Witt Jr., Maikel Garcia and MJ Melendez hit solo home runs for the Royals.

Tyler Gentry made his major league debut for the Royals, coming on as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.

Fielder Garrett Hampson threw a hitless ninth inning for Kansas City.
