When it comes to decorating with color, neutral colors have always been and will always be the most timeless. While these simple shades are sophisticated and versatile, that doesn’t mean they can’t be uninteresting too.
In 2024, a palette of classic neutrals like white, beige and gray can seem dated, which can leave those of us who don’t tend to decorate with bold and bright hues unsure how to add interest to plain spaces.
Luckily, interior designer Shea McGee just shared her secret to using color instead of neutrals, and we’re sold. This approach preserves the classic elegance of decorating with neutrals while still enlivening spaces, making them feel rich, earthy, and interesting.
On Instagram, Shea shared a video in which she advocates decorating with muted earth tones as a fresh and alternative color trend to neutrals.
“I love using color as neutrals by choosing shades that feel muted,” the designer explains. Walking through a McGee & Co. bedroom, Shea uses green and blue as examples. While these two hues can be some of the boldest in decorating, the variations of these two shades in this relaxing bedroom—a muted olive headboard and soft navy pillows—create a timeless color palette that’s more interesting than classic neutrals.
“We get color, but it’s still very calming in the room because of the tone you’re working with,” Shea continues.

This approach to color goes hand in hand with another, broader color trend we’ve been tracking this year: replacing cool tones with warmer ones. While cool grays and cool whites can feel stark in interiors, switching to earthy, warm tones like sage green and rust tones creates far more inviting and calming spaces.
“In 2024, we’re seeing people celebrate color in a more contemporary way,” explains Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design at Lick and Color Psychologist. “Gray neutrals are being replaced by colors with warmer, yellow undertones, and the days of traditional white baseboards being mandated are long gone.”
While muted colors are a great choice for decorating, as Shea shows, you can also incorporate them into your color ideas in larger quantities. Consider upgrading white walls with a soft sage green color, which will certainly add warmth to the room while maintaining a calm atmosphere.
“Decorators are becoming more confident and are adding colour to their homes, from the walls to the ceiling,” Tash continues.
