Smoke detected on Singapore Airlines flight during landing at Tokyo Narita Airport, runway temporarily closed

White smoke was seen coming from the engine as a Singapore Airlines flight landed at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport on Monday, forcing authorities to close the runway for nearly an hour. An official said tire fragments were spotted on the runway.

Rescue workers found no signs of fire on flight SQ638, which carried 276 passengers and crew. No injuries were reported and the aircraft was towed for repairs as runway B was closed for about 50 minutes from about 7:40 a.m. (local time).

Six fire engines and two ambulances were deployed to deal with the situation, an airport official told AFP news agency.

“We received a report that white smoke was coming from the left engine,” a Narita city fire official told AFP.

The airport office of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said there may have been problems when the Boeing 787 aircraft landed at Narita Airport.

“It was reported that there was a possibility that there was a problem during landing,” said a Narita Airport spokesman.

Firefighters monitored the plane for more than an hour to check for any signs of fire and left the scene after no fire was reported, the official said, adding that tire debris was found on the runway.
