Son Of Tepin: A warm commission for the Curragh opener

Observations of the European Racing Scene shines a spotlight on the best European racing today, featuring well-bred horses at the start of their careers, notable horses returning to racing and young racehorses who have achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday’s observations feature a son of Tepin (Bernstein).

13.45 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2 years, 7 ft
DELACROIX (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the first big Ballydoyle runner on a big day for the stable and will surely start at prohibitive odds considering how promising he was when second on his debut at Leopardstown last month. A son of six-time top winner and two-time champion Tepin (Bernstein), whose 3-year-old daughter Grateful (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) won the G3 Stanerra Stakes last month, he looks set to be the last to add his name to a winners list that includes eventual G1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes winners Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) as well as his own stablemate Diego Velazquez (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). He will be joined by fellow Rosegreen representative Bay of Acapulco (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})the first foal out of a full sister to Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), whose daughter Ecstatic (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) was named TDN Rising Star in Tipperary on Friday, while his rivals include Juddmonte’s unraced colt Storm Piece (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire})a Ger Lyons-trained son of G1 Falmouth Stakes heroine Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar) and Qatar Bloodstock, David Howden, China Horse Club and Ballylinch Stud’s Hostility (Anger) (No, no, never)a 430,000 guineas graduate of Tattersalls Book 1 from the Joseph O’Brien yard, responsible for the aforementioned Thunder Moon and Al Riffa.

13.55 Newmarket, Debutantes, £40,000, 2yo, female, 7ft
SUHUB (GB) (Mohaather {GB}) is a significant runner for Shadwell as he is the first foal of the G1 Falmouth Stakes and G1 Sun Chariot Stakes heroine Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). William Haggas is in charge of the homegrown foal whose 11 competitors feature some interesting types from the leading stables including Ballydoyles Island hopping (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB})another first foal, whose dam Heaven Of Heavens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a full sister to the Coolmore mare Magical (Ire) and Rhododendron (Ire) and who is therefore closely related to Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

14.15 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2 years old, 6 feet
SOURCE CODE (FR) (Blue Point {Ire}) is a half-brother to this year’s Derby runner-up Ambiente Friendly (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who, according to Joseph O’Brien, has evidently taken more from his father’s line than he has on this sprint course. The home-bred stallion of Al Shira’aa Racing will face 18 contemporaries on his debut, including Ballydoyle’s experienced Ides Of March (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB})the son of GI Frizette Stakes heroine Nickname (Scat Daddy), who shortens the trip after chasing his promising stablemate The Lion In Winter (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) over seven furlongs here last month.

14.50 Curragh, Cond, €32,000, 2 years old, female, 7ft
BALLET SHOES (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) is Ryan Moore’s choice of two Ballydoyle representatives in this American Racing Channel Irish EBF Fillies Juvenile Race won by the stable’s future G1 Matron Stakes and G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes heroine Hydrangea (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), in which Opera Singer (Justify) lost to A Lilac Rolla (Ire) (Harry Angel {Ire}) 12 months ago. The first foal of multiple Group 1 winner Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and granddaughter of Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), she finished a very respectable third to Juddmonte’s TDN Rising Star Red Letter (GB) (Frankel {GB}) on her debut and that form should be good enough here. Also by Rosegreen, the newcomer Tea Rose (Ire) (Frankel {GB})the second foal from Coolmore’s 6 million guilders purchase, Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who rose to fame by winning the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye and the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes, while Coolmore has clearly attached great importance to this competition with three other entrants. These include two blue-blooded newcomers in the Donnacha O’Brien-trained Falling Snow (Ire) (Justify)the fourth foal out of the heroine of the G1 1,000 Guineas, G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas, G1 Coronation Stakes and G1 Nassau Stakes Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who ironically lost in the Matron to the aforementioned Hydrangea; and the Willie Browne runner Shortly before (Anger) (Justification)a daughter of two-time Classic-placed Gagnoa (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), who is one half of Pour Moi (Ire), responsible for War Front’s Black Type winners Ancient Rome and Etoile, the latter interestingly winning her only Pattern race, the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies’ Sprint Stakes at Naas on her debut.
