Meteorologists continue to monitor Storm Debby, now a post-tropical cyclone, as it continues to move northward, dumping rain across the Mid-Atlantic states. A new tropical wave is also forming over the Atlantic.

Post-tropical cyclone Debby is moving northward Friday, bringing heavy rains and a “significant flooding threat” from the northern Mid-Atlantic states to northern New York State, according to a warning from the National Hurricane Center. Further south, parts of the Carolinas coast are expected to see heavy rains Friday, with significant flooding areas.

Additionally, there was a threat of several tornadoes from eastern North Carolina through Virginia to Maryland early Friday morning, and on Friday the tornado threat will shift north to New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and eastern New York.

Meteorologists observe the formation of a new tropical wave

Meteorologists are also tracking a tropical wave over the tropical Atlantic Ocean, several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa, which will produce “widespread, disorganized showers and thunderstorms.” The tropical wave is expected to develop slowly over the next few days as it moves westward across the central tropical Atlantic Ocean, meteorologists said.

The current probability of formation within the next 48 hours is almost 0%, while the probability of formation within the next seven days is 50%.

Subsequently, a tropical depression could form early next week on its way to the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean, which could reach the Greater Antilles by the middle of next week.

If the storm gets a name, it will be called “Ernesto.”
