Strong winds in the Delta cause power outages for hundreds of residents

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – A power outage in the Delta area left about 1,400 members without power as of the morning of August 7.

According to the Golden Valley Electric Association (GVEA), strong winds began knocking trees into their infrastructure around 1 a.m.

This resulted in numerous power line, pole and truss failures. By 8 a.m., 1,405 members were still without power.

According to Ashley Bradish, GVEA’s director of external relations and public affairs, four teams with a total of eight workers were sent to the area to clarify the situation.

To restore power under these conditions, trees and branches must be removed from power lines and damaged crossbeams must be repaired.

While power was restored to most customers on Wednesday, it is currently unclear when potential power outages will cease.

“We can assure people that we are on the ground and working to restore power. But knowing that the winds are expected to continue into the early evening, members need to be prepared for more power outages should the winds continue. Crews report that they are fixing one power outage and then a tree could fall somewhere else and cause another one. So we are confident that the winds are the end of it,” Bradish said.

At 4 p.m., Bradish told the Fairbanks News Center that power had been restored to all but four members in Delta.
