With principal photography on Writer/Director James Gunn‘S David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane)-actor Superman With filming recently completed and a lot of post-production still to be done before July 2025, we now get some additional insights into the first feature film of the new DCU. A look at Josh Horowitz and his Happy Sad Confused Podcasts, Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) had a message for fans who have been wondering what to expect from Gunn’s effort. “The whole movie is very faithful to the comics, but with a James Gunn twist. I think it’s really funny, clever and heartwarming…at least that was my experience on set. Of course, things can change in the editing room, but…God, I loved James,” Merced shared, explaining how Gunn created an environment on set that gave the actors “space to be excited, to have confidence and to relax into the role.”

Merced continued, “He’s so prepared. I could breathe a sigh of relief on set and not worry about it afterward because James is one of those people who knows exactly what they want, will stop at nothing to get it, has a shot list, communicates with his team and everyone is prepared when they get there because they’ve worked with him for over twenty years.” The actress added, “When someone is in charge and you’re there, you have room to be happy, to have confidence and to relax into the role. That was the most beautiful part of the experience.”

Superman: A look back at the journey so far…

“I am beyond excited to announce the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29th, which coincidentally and unplanned is Superman’s birthday,” Gunn wrote as a caption to his post, in which he showed off the famous “S” on his Superman costume, before confirming the film’s title change. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I finished the final draft, it was clear that the title was SUPERMAN. Heading your way in July 2025.”

Here is a look back at a screenshot of Gunn’s Threads post, which shows a group photo of the cast (and Nicholas Hoult definitely in Lex Luthor mode) from the table:

“After the table read with the #Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, Producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, The Engineer, all together for the first time! What a wonderful day.” Gunn wrote in the caption of his Instagram post showing off the team:

#Cleveland – today we leave you after six amazing weeks of filming,” Gunn wrote at the beginning of the caption to the photo gallery he shared in mid-July of the team’s experiences filming in the city. “From the moment we first came here to explore almost a year ago and the Terminal Tower was lit up in the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I was walking down your streets and someone stopped me and told me how grateful they were that we were filming in their city – not once, not twice, but dozens of times. The film’s wonderful extras were always so fun and witty and they clapped after takes, reminding us Hollywood cynics why we make films in the first place.”

Gunn continued, “The pride of being where Jerry and Joe first created Superman was invigorating. You embody his spirit. But I was just as touched by the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations, restaurants and gathering places. Any town would be so lucky to have people who love their town as much as you do. You simply couldn’t have been more wonderful, kind or accommodating to me, our cast and crew. Thank you so much for being our friends and partners on this film. Love to all of you.🙏🧜‍♂️❤️” Here’s a look at Gunn’s original post:

The announcement…

Here’s a look back at Gunn’s March 2023 tweet announcing that he would write And Direction Superman: Legacyfollowed by the full, heartfelt text of the message he shared, confirming what had been circulating on social media since last week:

“Yes, I am directing Superman: Legacy, which is set to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me that when he saw the release date, he started crying. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s daddy’s birthday.’ I didn’t realize that,” Gunn wrote in the introduction to his series of tweets announcing the news. “I lost my father almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and film, and without him I wouldn’t be doing this film now. It’s been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I said no at first because I didn’t see a path that felt unique, fun, emotional and gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Then, a little less than a year ago, I saw a path that in many ways revolved around Superman’s legacy – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents shape him and his choices.”

That brings us to July 2024 – and to big filming news from Gunn. “And that’s it,” Gunn wrote at the start of his social media post this morning. “God bless our cast and crew whose dedication, creativity and hard work brought this project to life. I set out to make a film about a good man in a world that isn’t always so good. And the goodness and kindness and love I encountered on set every day inspired me and pushed me forward when I felt too exhausted to go on alone. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It was an honor. The destination was Superman, but the journey was the effort and laughter and emotions and ideas and magic we shared together on set – and for that, I am forever grateful. ❤️”
