SVU’s most controversial lawyer returns after 3 years (but there’s a caveat)

The news that Law & Order: SVUThe return of Los Angeles’ most controversial defense attorney after three years comes with a caveat. The long-running police procedural has featured many assistant district attorneys over the years, many of whom Law & Order: SVUAmong the saddest episodes are cases where the investigators knew who did it, but the defense attorneys were able to obtain an acquittal due to some technicalities. Nevertheless, a certain defense attorney in Law & Order: SVUDue to a personal decision, Mr Bush’s final years were controversial.




In rare cases, former prosecutors switch sides and work as part of the defense instead.. One of these people was Rita Calhoun (Elizabeth Marvel), who was initially a prosecutor but then became a criminal defense attorney and made controversial decisions. Calhoun has not been seen for three years but we will return to law and order Franchise in 2024. However, she will not be alongside Benson’s Law & Order: SVU Team of Season 26 as it normally was.

Marvel, fresh from her engagement at For lack of evidencewill be a guest star on law and order Season 24 as Rita Calhoun. The episode will also feature a crossover appearance by Mariska Hargitay. Not much is known about her appearance, but Calhoun could defend a murder suspect who is also accused of sexually abusing his victim. This means that Calhoun’s path could cross with Benson again, even though he is not scheduled to appear on the show. Law & Order: SVU.

It will be interesting to see how the SVU-Homicide interface in this case affects the dynamic between Calhoun and Benson.


This twist marks the first time that Calhoun appears in another show in the franchise and not Law & Order: SVUShe has appeared more than a dozen times in the Mariska Hargitay-led episode, usually defending Manhattan SVU’s perp of the week, so it will be interesting to see how the interface between SVU and Homicide evolves in the upcoming law and order The Season 24 case impacts the dynamic between Calhoun and Benson.

Marvel’s last appearance was particularly controversial because Calhoun defended a judge who ran for Attorney General and was a serial rapist and abuser of power even though she knew full well that he was guilty. When Benson confronted her, Calhoun said she was doing what she had to do to advance in her career. Most importantly, she told Benson: “Sit back and pretend you’re having fun.” They argue that they have to do things they don’t want to do in order to enrich themselves. In a show that deals with consent and sexual abuse, that was disturbing to hear.

Calhoun hasn’t been seen on screen for three years, hence her guest appearance on law and order Season 24 will answer the question of whether it was crucial for her to abandon her morals to defend a prominent rapist. Although she did not appear in Law & Order: SVUher upcoming return to the Dick Wolf franchise will provide some closure. Perhaps more subtly, she will also deliver a strong message about Calhoun’s decisions over the past few years.
