Syracuse Mets game against Worcester suspended due to rain

Result

Syracuse, NY – Sunday afternoon’s game between the Syracuse Mets and Worcester Red Sox was halted due to rain in the fifth inning when Syracuse led 4-2. Since the Mets and Red Sox are not playing in Syracuse again this season, play will resume at some point in Worcester when the two teams meet at Polar Park from Sept. 10-15.

Syracuse outscored Worcester in the second half of the first inning, scoring four runs to take a commanding 4-0 lead. It all happened with two outs, as five consecutive hits brought home the four runs. Four consecutive singles by Drew Gilbert, Luke Ritter, DJ Stewart and Pablo Reyes scored two of the runs. Then a two-run triple by Jackie Bradley Jr. capped the scoring flurry and gave the Mets a 4-0 lead.

From there, Tylor Megill began to unbalance the WooSox batters. The right-hander played effortlessly through the first four innings, allowing just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts in four scoreless innings to start the game.

In the fifth inning, however, the Red Sox started to trouble Megill. Eddy Alvarez led off the inning with a walk. Bobby Dalbec followed with a two-run homer, cutting Worcester’s deficit in half to 4-2. Then the drizzle got heavier, and Megill walked several batters in a row, and the game was delayed because there were runners on first and second base and no outs in the fifth inning, making the score 4-2.

Syracuse visits Worcester from September 10-15. One of those days will see the nine-inning game completed on Sunday with Syracuse as the “home team” on the scoreboard, followed by a seven-inning game.

The Syracuse Mets will travel after their week-long home series against the Worcester Red Sox to face the Washington Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings. The first game of the six-game series is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.
