Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso may terminate contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield

Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso announced Wednesday that it may terminate its existing in-network provider agreement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso notified BCBSTX of their intention to terminate the contract.

Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso said they were unable to reach a resolution with BCBSTX after a lengthy negotiation process.

“We are still negotiating, but we still had to send them a notice of termination that would take effect on October 7 if negotiations cannot continue appropriately,” said Dr. Richard Lange, president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

If the contract is terminated, Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso specialists will no longer be considered part of the BCBSTX plan holders’ network.

These include HMO, PPO and Blue Advantage HMO.

Dr. Lange explained that this consideration is being made because BCBSTX is not willing to increase the amount the center receives from insurance for insured patients.

If both parties cannot reach a resolution, the termination will take effect on October 7 for HMO and PPO plans and January 5 for Blue Advantage HMO.

Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso said they understand that their patients and Texas Tech Health El Paso employees and their families are the ones most affected.
