The Beachside Hotel is preparing to open its doors on Nantucket next month.
Built in 1960 on North Beach Street, the Beachside Hotel was designed by New York studio Parts and Labor Design (PLD) and is a tribute to the Arts and Crafts era of the 1960s and 1970s on the island of Massachusetts.
PLD preserved the hotel’s façade – clad in the area’s typical white cedar shingles – as well as five original buildings that surround a courtyard with a pool, lawn and seating areas.
Public areas at Beachside Hotel
Inside, the lobby serves as a hub for socializing, with lounge seating extending from the fireplace to a bar lined with earthy seafoam-green tiles. The bar is lined with plush seersucker linen bar stools, while tapered seagrass pendant lights hang from an oak-paneled ceiling.
The lobby walls are adorned with works by Rhode Island-based artist Sean Spellman, as well as paintings by Gayle Fitzpatrick, mosaics and watercolors. The space is reminiscent of a living room, thanks to a tiled fireplace, warm-toned seating, cantilevered woven chairs and a custom tile coffee table.
The checkered terracotta floor inside leads outside to the pool, where the grassy areas are lined with seating in the colors of the sunset.
In the guest rooms
The guest rooms are reminiscent of a beach house and feature allusions to the rise of arts and crafts and the textile industry in the USA in the mid-last century.
Beds feature patchwork quilts and soft linen headboards, and walls are decorated with vintage artwork such as tapestries, paintings and drawings.
“Our original concept revolves around the history of textiles and craftsmanship on the island, and many of the materials and details we used reflect that ethos,” says PLD founder Jeremy Levitt. “The property is truly open-plan. Everything is oriented toward the interior lawn and pool, (including) the main lobby (and) each guest room, which encourages guests to slow down, wander and explore.”
