In 1974, fueled by her love of thrift store shopping, Kerstin Block founded Buffalo Exchange in Tucson, Arizona with a novel business model: a thrift store where customers could purchase hand-picked secondhand items and immediately swap or sell their clothes. Together with her husband Spencer, who handled the store’s logistics, they transformed a small shop into a thriving business known for affordable and stylish clothing. Despite limited experience in the fashion industry, her commitment to principles such as fairness and respect drove the store’s growth. Over the decades, Buffalo Exchange expanded across the United States, championing sustainable fashion and empowering customers, especially women. After 50 years, Kerstin retired in 2024 and handed over the reins to her daughter Rebecca Block.
