In 2009, co-founder and CEO James Reinhart discovered he had a closet full of unworn clothing. Amarcord Vintage Fashion
Founded in 2000 by Patti Bordoni and Marco Liotta, Amarcord Vintage Fashion is one of New York’s premier destinations for high-quality vintage clothing. Buffalo Stock Exchange
In 1974, fueled by her love of thrift store shopping, Kerstin Block founded Buffalo Exchange in Tucson, Arizona with a novel business model: a thrift store where customers could purchase hand-picked secondhand items and immediately swap or sell their clothes. Together with her husband Spencer, who handled the store’s logistics, they transformed a small shop into a thriving business known for affordable and stylish clothing. Despite limited experience in the fashion industry, her commitment to principles such as fairness and respect drove the store’s growth. Over the decades, Buffalo Exchange expanded across the United States, championing sustainable fashion and empowering customers, especially women. After 50 years, Kerstin retired in 2024 and handed over the reins to her daughter Rebecca Block.
The true reality
Julie Wainwright saw the need for change and envisioned a future where fashion is more sustainable. In 2011, Wainwright co-founded The RealReal with now President and COO Rati Levesque with the mission to extend the lifecycle of luxury goods and make fashion more sustainable and accessible. What started as a small business with Julie and Rati visiting consignors in a U-Haul has grown into a leading platform for authenticated luxury resale. The mission remains to empower both consignors and buyers, extending the lifespan of luxury items while maintaining the integrity of luxury brands and promoting a more sustainable fashion industry.
Depop
Depop was founded as a social shopping app for fashion magazine PIG and has grown into a leading peer-to-peer marketplace for finding and sharing fashion. Depop is headquartered in London with additional offices in New York and Manchester. Today, Depop is a wholly owned subsidiary of Etsy but retains its distinctive identity. Since its launch in 2011, Depop has grown to a community of 35 million registered users and is driving a global trend towards circular fashion by making second-hand clothing desirable and accessible.
