The color trend green remains this autumn

Confession: As I write this, listening to Charli XCX’s hit album “Brat,” I’m rocking my head ever so slightly. Because yes, I’m still fully in the Brat Girl Summer. And like many of you reading this, so is my wardrobe. Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, says the musician brought a new dimension to citrus green with the album. “It’s taken on a life of its own,” she notes of the trend. New York-based stylist Coco Schiffer makes another interesting point: “Lime green is the opposite of quiet luxury, a direction that consumers and fashion fans alike are ready for.” This movement, as Pressman calls it, has also resonated with designers of all kinds, as green in general will remain en vogue for fall.

“There was so much green on the Fall/Winter 2024 runways in all sorts of shades and patterns,” notes stylist and creative consultant Olivia Wayman. Fashion industry veteran Miuccia Prada, for example, embraced the color at Miu Miu and Prada. The former was a little more playful, presenting a striking neon green matching jacket and skirt set, while the latter opted for a ribbed turtleneck in a fall-ready light olive shade. And at Gucci, creative director Sabato De Sarno sent a model down the runway wearing a printed fern green boxy blazer and a lemon-lime green logo-embellished bag.

Below you’ll find some outfit inspiration for green (think lime, sage, and forest green) this summer and well into fall.

Become Goofy

Since lime green is already playful, you might as well have some fun with your outfit, right? That’s what influencer Marianne Theodorsen seemed to think when she livened up her colorful tote bag with an equally exciting Keroppi bag charm. As for her attire, the content creator incorporated even more green into the look with a printed blazer. Follow her example and finish off the daring outfit with a simple white tee and ripped denim.

Bundle

“Fall is all about layering, and my favorite way to incorporate greens is to wear them in a jacket, like a cargo or classic trench coat,” explains Wayman. Another option is a cozy coat with fur trim, like the sage version above. Up the cool factor of the outerwear with a bubblegum pink top, maroon leather pants, and zebra-print heels (a pattern that’s slowly gaining popularity).

Inspired by nature

Pressman also sees natural-inspired hues, like this earthy green here, trending right now. If you’re drawn to dark colors, this sleeveless mini dress could be just the thing for you. For a night out, pair it with strappy sandals and a statement pendant necklace.

Earn your stripes

A green striped shirt, whether in a rich emerald shade or soft pastel tones, looks both contemporary and classic. Make it the focal point of your outfit by sticking to black pieces otherwise. But if you’re thinking about adding a touch more of the trending color to your outfit, jewelry is the way to go. “Emeralds are a versatile gemstone and contrast beautifully with most colors. They’re festive, subtle and earthy all at the same time,” explains Aditi Daga, co-founder of Angara. “Personally, I like to play with styling by wearing layers and playing with contrast and size.”

Preppy Cool

Fry lime not your thing? Maybe you like a dark college green, which Pressman says fits the eclectic grandpa look. “When I think of this trend, I really think of Britain,” she adds, saying it has a vintage vibe. If that sounds like something you like, pull on the look in the form of a cozy sweater. Opt for pleated trousers or shorts depending on the weather forecast. Leather loafers and white knee socks give the ensemble even more of a preppy feel.
