When it comes to the the best and most worth watching series on Netflix, Blue-Eyed Samurai takes the lead for me in a million different ways. While a second season is confirmed (which you can watch on Netflix subscription whenever it is published), originally Blue-Eyed Samurai no continuation was guaranteed, especially if underrated Netflix shows be cancelled so often – that is, until the changes came in, something the makers always grateful for.
I’m talking, of course, about how social media helped this Netflix series about a mixed-race Japanese warrior. Blue-Eyed Samurai exploded after changes to the main character Mizu and several other characters began to spread through media such as TikTok, Twitter, and more in December 2023 and the new year.
After the animated series for adults had a Nomination for the Primetime Emmy 2024 For the Outstanding Animated Program award, I had the chance to speak with co-creators (and real-life married couple) Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, and I knew I had to ask them about the impact social media has had on the show. Noizumi was quick to say they were so “grateful” and there’s no greater accomplishment than “capturing the attention” of younger generations these days:
Well, we’re grateful for that. We’re very grateful to the people who are making these changes. Our daughter showed us some changes. She was like, “Oh my God, it’s on my For You page!” And it’s amazing the changes these people are making… is there any greater praise than to get young people’s attention like that?
Green agreed, saying that while the two are “not really on social media,” they love seeing their kids’ changes and seeing what people “gravitate toward” on the show. Of course, some changes can be a little hard to decipher, so much so that he felt the need to ask his kids if it was a “compliment” or a “poke” at the show, jokingly saying “it’s both” sometimes:
It was really fun to see how much they tackled relationships. It seemed like it was just about two characters finding each other or fighting each other, and they also disagreed on which was the most important relationship. It was great. It’s one of the most fun forms of interaction, but it’s something that’s very foreign to me. We’re not really on social media. Our kids are, and we had to have them explain certain things to us. One of my favorite questions to ask: “Is that a compliment or are they making fun of us? I can’t tell.” And it’s both.
Green has also written for films such as the X-Men film Logan, Alien: Covenant, Blade Runner 2049 (this receives a Continuation of the television series, Blade Runner 2099), and more, but I think Blue-Eyed Samurai is some of his best work with Noizumi to date – and the fan edits are clear evidence of the love he has for it.
Blue-Eyed Samurai The second season is expected to air on Netflix’s TV schedule at some point. Even if it may not be part of the TV premiere program 2024There is hope that it will happen next year – and when that happens, I will be ready with my TikTok algorithm.
