The origins of the crow

Although The Crow has now become an internationally known franchise, it began as a very personal story. When O’Barr was 18, his fiancĂ©e was killed by a drunk driver. So O’Barr created the comic with the intention of getting some of the “anger and hatred” over the tragedy out of his system.

Unfortunately, the work had the opposite effect. But O’Barr shares that he found himself “focusing on the negative” and “amplifying” it. He believes it made his problem worse rather than lessened it. However, after meeting and befriending Lee, experiencing his death, and watching the film countless times, “O’Barr achieved what is now called ‘closure’ when he visited his grave in Seattle.”
