The Detroit Youth Summit helps to build connections and convey the importance of voting

Just weeks before the start of the school year, a group of young people gathered in Detroit to focus on their future.

The Detroit Youth Summit brings together participants ages 14 to 24 to discuss how they can make a positive difference in their neighborhood.

“This is where youth and leaders come together to build Detroit,” said Maria Franklin, director of L!FE.

This year’s summit was held at Wayne County Community College on Fort Street.

Jaedon Wizzard, a student at Cass Tech High School and one of the participants, says he is using the summit to network with other future leaders.

“For most of us, this is the most important time right now. We’re walking on stage, we’re 11th graders, maybe 12th graders, trying to get into college,” he said.

The summit also aims to raise awareness of the power of voting in elections.

“I learned about voting and that in Michigan you can legally vote at 17.5 years old,” Wizzard said.

“We explain to them how easy it is, what is needed and how to overcome the obstacles,” Franklin said.

If you are eligible to vote, you can register to vote at the event.
