The five best new comic books of the week (July 31)

Choosing the best five comics of the week was not easy. David Peposes Space Spirit Issue 4 was the best issue of the series; it was the first time Space Ghost, Jan, and Jace faced real competition and the issue ended on a cliffhanger that felt like a major turning point in the series. Scarlett (written by Kelly Thompson with art by Marco Ferrari) was so good it felt like a movie – and it was proof that they were the perfect people to create this series. It was also hard not to Batman No. 151 here. This was a crucial point in the DC Comics crossover Absolute power.

Unfortunately, only five made the list. Here are the best of the week with minimal spoilers.

I chose this comic as my pick for the best book of the week and it exceeded my expectations. Gail Simone’s impeccable writing combined with David Marquez’s beautiful illustrations have created a comic worthy of the Marvel mutant mythology. This will be a contender for the title of best comic of the year and possibly one of the best X-Men stories. Plus, new mutants were introduced into the X-Men story.

Absolute power #2 capped off an incredible first issue. A mind- and body-controlled superhero invades the Fortress of Solitude and defeats several resistance fighters, leading to more heroes being captured. The only escape comes thanks to the sacrifice of one of Waller’s workers and Superman’s destruction of his home.

Absolute power #2 left this author with nothing but anticipation for the next installment. So far, this is a candidate for one of DC Comics’ best crossovers.

Doctor Strange may not be Sorcerer Supreme (that happened in Blood Hunt No. 5), but he still wins at life. His wife Clea reminds him that he is more than the title. She said, “I never loved the cloak, Stephen. I loved the man.” Then she presented him with a new cloak and named him the Master of Black Magic in Blue.

This could be the end of Jed MacKay’s career Doctor Strangebut he finished it in a way that made it easy for the next creative team. Well done.

All new The ultimate black panther Comics have always been good, but this was fantastic. The story got even better with plenty of action, a great story, and gorgeous illustrations. And to top it off, this issue had a fantastic portrayal of T’Challa, combining what we know about him with his Ultimate Universe personality. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Daredevil’s battle against Greed was one of his best. The funny thing is that it wasn’t about the action. It was incredible to see Matt Murdock fight Wilson Fisk (who was possessed by the devil Greed) by admitting his own mistakes. Sometimes, seeing someone win without throwing punches can be just as satisfying as an uppercut.

Saladin Ahmed started this series by testing Matt’s faith. He continued to make it interesting by keeping Matt’s faith and personal growth at the center. Part of what makes it interesting is the way Aaron Kuder drew the panels. For example, the page where Kingpin grabs Daredevil by the throat was beautiful.

Attention, new comic book!

If you see a comic book you don’t know and read Kieron Gillen’s name, you can still trust that it’s good. Gillen’s classic The Evil + The Divine And Star Wars: Darth Vader. The power fantasy will also be on his list of classics at some point.

That may sound like a bold claim, but it’s true. Issue #1 has all the elements you want from a first issue, like character and world building. It also features Caspar Wijngaard’s best illustrations of the week. You should make this issue part of your monthly reading.
