The hotel at the Cowboys’ training camp catches fire during the chaotic preseason

The Dallas Cowboys appeared to have several issues with their roster during training camp, but on Tuesday they faced a real problem.

Only two training sessions left before the training break: In the hotel where the Cowboys are staying during training camp in Oxnard, California, a room caught fire on Tuesday, the team announced. No one was injured.

The fire was confined to one room and the training operations were not disrupted.

The Cowboys have stayed at this hotel every year during training camp since 2012 because it is right next to two of their practice fields in Oxnard.

This was just the latest distraction the Cowboys have faced this offseason as they now enter the crucial 2024 season and try to rebound from their disastrous first-round playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers in January.

The biggest story facing the Cowboys this season is the absence of star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who is still not on the team’s active roster due to a delay in his contract extension.

The Cowboys have removed Lamb from their active roster and placed the star receiver on the reserve/non-report list. Lamb has not participated in the team’s voluntary workouts or a mandatory minicamp and is now holding back. Ttraining camp, which means he will be subject to fines of up to $40,000 per day for each missed practice. He is eligible for $17.9 million in the five-year option on his rookie contract in 2024.

The disagreement coincided with a series of cryptic social media posts from Lamb. He responded with “lol” to a video of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones saying there was “no urgency” to see Lamb’s contract extension through. He also unfollowed the Cowboys on social media and removed all mentions of the team from his bio.

The Cowboys reportedly made CeeDee Lamb a contract extension offer that would make him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL on an annual basis. That apparently still isn’t enough.

Lamb has not expressed interest in signing the Cowboys’ latest contract extension, which is reported to be worth around $33 million per year, NFL Media reported. That would put only Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson at the highest annual salary of an NFL receiver ($35 million).

Meanwhile, there is also uncertainty about the contract status of quarterback Dak Prescott, who is entering the final year of his deal that will give the Cowboys a salary cap hit of $55.1 million in 2024.

Problems also arose with the Cowboys’ lesser-known players during training camp. Veteran defensive tackle Albert Huggins was recently reprimanded and disciplined by head coach Mike McCarthy after the 300-pound tackle knocked down a Rams intern during a joint practice earlier this week.

Defensive tackle and former first-round pick Mazi Smith suited up for Dallas’ second preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday. Smith suffered an allergic reaction during training camp on Friday and is being treated, the team said in a press release.
