The Moxy Hotel opens on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg. Interior view

A seven-story Moxy hotel with 163 rooms, a rooftop pool, a restaurant, a cafe-bar and public gathering spaces has just opened in St. Petersburg’s Edge district. Developer PTM Partners and hotel operator DoveHill celebrated with a grand opening party on Thursday.

Moxy St. Pete is the first part of a larger mixed-use project called The Edge Collective that PTM Partners is building along the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Central Avenue.

Michael Tillman, CEO of PTM Partners, told the Tampa Bay Times that the Moxy is a much-needed addition to St. Petersburg’s fledgling hotel market.

“We see a tremendous opportunity to offer a lifestyle hotel with countless indoor and outdoor activities for travelers and locals,” he said. “There is nothing else like this here.”

Before entering the building, guests can enjoy a drink in the lobby bar, which faces Central Avenue. Inside, the elegant mid-century decor is complemented by a floral mural by local artist Ashley Cassens. A small stage offers live music and entertainment.

At the back of the lobby, Rose’s Coffee Bar serves espresso drinks, cold brew, smoothies and pastries.

The ground floor also features a podcast studio that anyone can reserve and 1,000 square feet of flexible conference space. The Florida-themed conference room is decorated with a 3D mural of a swimming pool and the floors are designed to look like a shuffleboard court.

On the seventh floor, you’ll find a rooftop pool, a first for the Edge District. Tillman said they hope to create something reminiscent of a Miami Beach club, with daytime parties and other events open to the public.

The top floor also houses Sparrow, an intimate cocktail lounge and restaurant opening in the fall. The 4,000-square-foot space offers indoor and outdoor seating with views of Central Avenue.

Part of the Marriott Bonvoy family, Moxy hotels tend to be geared toward younger guests, with smaller rooms and located in trendy neighborhoods with plenty of shopping and dining options.

Rooms can be booked now and the first guests will arrive on Thursday.

Nick Pantuliano, Chief Operating Officer of PTM Partners, believes the Edge District is a perfect fit with Moxy’s brand ethos.

“Central Avenue is one of the best pedestrian corridors in the country,” he said, adding that the goal of the entire Edge Collective project is to further enhance the pedestrian-friendly nature of the area.

Phase I of the Edge Collective includes a solidcore Pilates studio and Floyd’s Barbershop in the same building as the Moxy, as well as 6,000 square feet of office space and a Turkish restaurant called Bosphorous next door at 1246 Central Ave. The first phase is scheduled to be completed in early 2025.

Phase II, announced late last year, will include a 200-foot high-rise tower with approximately 350 luxury apartments, 45,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, and 360 parking spaces.
