The NY Giants waste no time and release 10 players, including the 2022 draft pick

After losing to the New York Jets, the NY Giants and their boss Brian Daboll now have to get down to business. On August 27th at 4:00 p.m. ET, Daboll will have to cut his roster down to 53 men, which is no easy task. However, he’s off to a good start when it comes to making difficult decisions, as some players have already received some unwelcome news.

The Giants have announced that 10 players will be absent from the Week 1 showdown against the Minnesota Vikings. These players are lineman Marcus McKethan, running back Joshua Kelley, running back Lorenzo Lingard, wideout John Jiles, wideout Ayir Asante, defensive lineman Kyler Baugh, linebacker Trey Kiser, cornerback Breon Borders, cornerback Christian Holmes and safety Clayton Isbell:

There aren’t many surprises on this list, but the one that stands out is McKethan. A fifth-round pick in 2022, the young player was forced to start five games last season due to the many injuries on the offensive line and played in 16. This summer, however, as Dan Duggan noted, McKethan was never a true contender for a spot on the roster.

Receiver Ayir Asante was an undrafted free agent signed by the team after the draft, but his dream run to the 53-man roster was not successful. Unfortunately for Asante, his release was sealed when he fumbled the opening kickoff against the Jets at MetLife Stadium. The only way he could have made the team was if he had been used on special teams, but he didn’t.

From a roster perspective, this is a great start for Daboll and the rest of his coaching staff, but more work is needed to get to 53 by the August 27 deadline. Everything must be completed by 4 p.m. that day. So far, double-digit players have been released and many more will follow.
