Today’s society is fascinated by all things paranormal and supernatural. It’s human nature to be curious, and some people explore these phenomena more than others. South Carolina offers many such opportunities, and it stands to reason that some of the state’s oldest places are a good place to start. In fact, one of the most haunted hotels in South Carolina, the John Rutledge House Inn, is the oldest hotel in the state. It’s beautiful, historic, and definitely worth a closer look.
The hotel was built in 1763 and today serves as an inn and a National Historic Landmark.
It was originally built by John Rutledge, one of the 55 signers of the US Constitution, as a home for his newly married wife Elizabeth Grimke.
Presidents George Washington and William Taft both lived in this house. The rich history and atmosphere of the entire property is palpable.
There are other things you can sense during your stay. It is said that a young girl died in a fire here years ago and her spirit still lives in the hotel today.
If you feel uncomfortable at night and wake up to find your pillow on the floor, it is because the girl’s ghost supposedly takes pleasure in pulling the pillows out from under the heads of guests throughout the hotel.
Some reported a strange smell of smoke and believed this was an indication of their presence.
There are also stories of her presence running down the hallway. It’s not something I would necessarily like, but I find it kind of charming.
It happened that lights were turned on or off without anyone being in the room.
Reports were also shared that she was watching through the windows.
Apart from the scary incidents, the hotel has endless charm.
The beautiful gates and piazza were crafted by 19th century wrought iron manufacturer, craftsman and entrepreneur Christopher Werner.
If you don’t mind the possibility of harmless pranks played by the girl’s ghost, you can enjoy complimentary tea, lemonade or sherry in the second-floor ballroom, where the first versions of the Constitution were drafted and where George Washington was received in 1791.
The service from the hotel staff is first class. Breakfast ordered the night before will be delivered to wherever you wish. The Piazza is a popular choice with guests.
Pet-friendly rooms are available and you can take close-up photos to commemorate your stay in this special, unique piece of history.
The inn loves pets and even offers guests an “A Dog’s World” package. Other package types are also available, including a “Foodies’ Paradise” package, a “Party of Two Elopement,” the “Charleston Girls’ Getaway” package, and more. So much fun!
