The Rings of Power cannot repeat a 7-year-old controversy involving a LOTR character

Summary

  • The second season of “The Rings of Power” features cult characters such as Tom Bombadil and Shelob.
  • Shelob’s appearance in the series will be different from previous depictions.
  • The aim of the series is to avoid controversies from the past, such as the portrayal of Shelob as a woman in “Shadow of War”.

Amazon Prime Video The Rings of Power has seen the appearance of an iconic Lord of the rings character, but it must avoid repeating the previous controversial mistake of a video game. The Rings of Power The release date of Season 2 is just around the corner and Prime Video has already revealed some key character names that will appear. Among them is Tom Bombadil, one of the biggest omissions from Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Another main character is Shelob, the evil spider of Torech Ungol, who appeared in Peter Jackson’s The Return of the King.

This would not be the first time that Kankra returns Lord of the rings media since the original film trilogy. The character was used in the 2017 video game Middle Earth: Shadow of Waralthough it was met with controversy because Shelob appeared in the form of a woman. The Rings of Power Season 2 already has a steep mountain to climb if it wants to win over more Tolkien fans, and this seven-year-old controversy has set the bar low for Shelob’s appearances. Hopefully this will be an easy win for the TV adaptation.

The return of Shelob in season 2 of The Rings of Power will show a different version of the villain

Shelob will not be as big as the audience is used to

Shelob attacks Isildur in the second season of The Rings of Power.

The Rings of Power Version of Shelob will not be a womanas actor Maxim Baldry has spoken a little about what the portrayal would look like. Baldry plays Isildur in the cast of the Prime Video show and in an interview with GamesRadar+he described the fight his character would have with Shelob. In particular, he says: “Isildur lies on the ground and has no idea where Shelob is, but he knows he is in a spider cave, and there is a back and forth between these two characters..” Shelob will definitely be a spider, even though the trailer shows that it will still look unknown.

She is the daughter of Ungoliant, which makes Shelob at least 6,000 years old. In the series, the spider still poses a significant threat to humans.

Canonically, Shelob lived during the Second Age and settled in Cirith Ungol before Sauron took control of Mordor. The Rings of Power takes place in the Second Age and The Lord of the Rings happens thousands of years later, Shelob will be smaller than in The Return of the King. She is the daughter of Ungoliant, which makes Shelob at least 6,000 years old, so the spider still poses a significant threat to a human in the series. She is just not as as big as when Frodo meets her later.

The Rings of Power should not repeat the Shelob controversy from “Shadow of War”

The writers of The Rings Of Power have already made too many creative decisions

Shelob in Middle Earth – Shadow of War

The Rings of Power Avoidance Shadow of War Mistake is in some ways a win for the series. After the divisive reaction to season 1, the show really cannot afford to continue making unnecessary creative decisions regarding Tolkien’s work. Since they already have Shelob fight Isildur, which never happens in Tolkien’s mythology, it would simply be in bad taste to continue to deviate from the original. The Rings of Power.
