The US Navy’s Blue Angels headline the Colorado Springs air show

A U.S. Navy flight demonstration team will take off this weekend as part of the Pikes Peak Regional Air Show.

Blue and yellow FA-18 Super Hornets will roam the skies, flying in precise patterns at speeds approaching Mach 1 and as close as 18 inches apart. The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels display is similar to the Air Force’s Thunderbirds flight demonstration group.

The Blue Angels shows will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Events include a demonstration by the US Air Force parachute team called “Wings of Blue” and a demonstration of large C-130 MAFFS transport aircraft used to fight wildfires. The event will also feature historic aircraft, such as the P-38 Lightning, which was used primarily in World War II.

Tickets are sold out. Organizers say proceeds will benefit the National Museum of World War II Aviation in Colorado Springs, the Fort Carson 4th Infantry Division Museum and the Peterson Air & Space Museum.

While the Colorado Springs airport will remain open for air traffic, some streets will be closed for the event and rehearsals that began Thursday. Powers Boulevard will be closed from Milton Proby to Fontaine Boulevard during certain hours.

Meanwhile, officials in Pueblo announced this week that the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will be the star of next year’s air show, currently scheduled for September 2025.
