Their flight was canceled, so the delegates made their way to the DNC.

The NPR Network will be reporting live from Chicago all week and bringing you the latest from the Democratic National Convention.

Where there is a will, there’s a way.

Due to weather conditions on the East Coast, several flights to Chicago had to be canceled late Sunday evening – including the flight that the two New York delegates Erik Bottcher and Allen Roskoff as well as Shaun Abreu, a member of the DNC Rules Committee, were supposed to take.

They were in a dilemma: the next flights would take them to the convention 48 hours later than planned.

But Bottcher had an idea. How about a road trip?

Abreu and Roskoff were ready to reroute the ride – and off they went.

“We had no choice but to go,” said Abreu, a New York City councilman who represents Manhattan’s 7th District. “We couldn’t miss the first day of the convention. And we knew that, so we went through with it.”

With food breaks and everything else, the drive took about 13 hours. Abreu said they split up into different driving shifts so each of them had some time to sleep.

“I’m telling you – I think both of these guys should be tested for sleep apnea,” Abreu said.

As tiring as the drive was, their excitement about the conference kept their spirits high and they had fun documenting their trip on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“We are all full of energy for November, so there was a lot to discuss,” Abreu said.

And there was also a country music playlist for entertainment.
