COLORADO – The Mount Blue Sky Summit Scenic Byway in Colorado will be closed to all motorized and non-motorized traffic on September 3 and will remain closed for construction through Memorial Day weekend in 2026. Access to the summit of Mount Blue Sky will be via hiking trails only.
Improvements to the Mt. Blue Sky Scenic Byway began in late July, with intermittent lane closures causing traffic delays for visitors. The upcoming closure will begin at the CDOT gate on Colo. Highway 5 and continue up the entire rest of the mountain. The summit road is traditionally closed for the winter season from Labor Day to Memorial Day each year, but the highway will not reopen on Memorial Day weekend next year.
The road up Mount Blue Sky was completed in 1930 and opened to the public in 1931. At the time, it was the highest road in the world, but today it remains the highest road in North America. The highest section of the road reaches an elevation of 14,130 feet, just 136 feet below the 14,266-foot summit of Mount Blue Sky. The Pikes Peak Highway, also in Colorado, is 20 feet shorter.
