When Kate Arends of Wit & Delight laid eyes on the living room in her future home in St. Paul, Minnesota, it was love at first sight. Sort of. She could picture her family hiding presents under a Christmas tree. (That idea later evolved into two trees that stood next to the bay window.) She couldn’t imagine keeping the bold peach-colored walls, though. But when she realized how magical the color looked in contrast to the view, she scrapped her plan to do everything in white. She embraced the room’s whimsical vibe and filled the space with a mix of vintage and contemporary decor.

Paint everything in one color
Walls, moldings, baseboards, moldings and door frames all have the same color tone, giving the room a cozy and modern atmosphere.
Consider how the room will be used
Kate wanted the decor to encourage quiet reading, socializing and conversation, so she foregoes the sink-in sofa set and instead arranged armchairs and a sofa in a traditional pattern.
Mix old and new
Kate loves unexpected contrasts, like the bistro table and floral sofa. “You might think the modern and the vintage don’t go together, but they look good together and the combination is really exciting,” she says.
