Thor’s expanded ability to create lightning constructs is an intriguing improvement, but it’s hard to say if this is a true evolution of his powers or something he’s just never thought of before.

Thor’s ability to create lightning isn’t new, but the ability to speak through it is. While shaping lightning is a natural extension of his powers, the ability to speak through it feels a bit more mythical, fitting with the character’s nature as Marvel’s current Asgardian Allfather.

Thor’s powers are really only limited by his imagination, by what he imagines the God of Thunder should be able to do… In myths and stories, a god can do whatever is necessary to get the story told, and it’s exactly the same with Thor.


Giant-Size Thor #1 spins out of parallel track Immortal Thor ongoing series where Thor has expanded his control over lightning like never before. Not only can he shape it, but Thor can also talk to lightning and deflect attacks by simply telling it to move. That’s exactly what Thor does in Giant Size No. 1; he commands the electricity stored in a giant robot to obey him and transmit his message. He does not summon lightning with Mjölnir, but he He gives existing lightning a new form, demonstrating mastery of his powers.

It’s also possible that Thor has always done this and just never thought of it before. Al Ewing’s version of Thor is constantly pushing the limits of his powers – not with feats of strength, but with acts of wisdom. Thor’s powers are really only limited by his imagination, imagining what the God of Thunder should be able to do. “Divinity” isn’t exactly a set list of powers. In myths and stories, a god can do whatever is necessary for the story to be told, and it’s exactly the same with Thor.

This lightning construct also raises the question of the exact metaphysics of Thor’s power. The “lightning” he forms Thor in giant size #1 is electricity from a machine, suggesting he can channel more than just natural lightning. It could be that the machine in question was specifically built to channel Thor’s power, but If Thor could control more forms of electricity, it would greatly change the scope of his abilities. This new power upgrade for Thor only raises further questions about the true power level of the God of Thunder.
