Thousands still without power after floods in Vermont – NECN

Due to the damage caused by Tropical Storm Debby in Vermont, thousands were still without power Saturday morning.

According to WPTZ, more than 30,000 people were still without power in Vermont and several counties in New York and New Hampshire.

Governor Phil Scott had warned that the remnants of Debby could cause severe damage, including in already flooded areas that were hit by flash floods twice last month.

But late in the evening, a flood warning was canceled. The floods that hit the northeastern part of the state on July 30 destroyed and damaged bridges and washed away roads in the rural town of Lyndon. The floods occurred three weeks after deadly flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl. President Joe Biden agreed to Vermont’s emergency declaration.

Rick Dente, owner of Dente’s Market in Barre, Vermont, tried to protect his store with plastic and sandbags as rain poured down Friday. “There’s not much else you can do,” he said.

Jaqi Kincaid, who was hit by flooding in Lyndon, Vermont, last month, said the previous storm destroyed her garage and well, leaving them without water, and knocked down a 120-foot tree and a fence.

“We do this a lot,” Kincaid said, holding her hands together as if in prayer.
