Toronto Blue Jays move former star to 60-day IL, claim intriguing pitcher

Before their first game of the series against the Cincinnati Reds, the Toronto Blue Jays made several changes to their roster. First, they placed former star player Alek Manoah on the 60-day injured list. Then they brought pitcher Eason Lucas off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

According to Hazel Mae of Sportsnet on social media:

#BlueJays acquired LHP Easton Lucas from the #Tigers via waivers. Lucas was sent to Buffalo.

The team also announced that RHP Alek Manoah was transferred to the 60-day IL

By placing Manoah on the 60-day injured list, he is essentially removed from the 40-man roster. That makes room for Lucas.

Manoah is out for the rest of the season after undergoing elbow surgery. He only made five appearances for Toronto this year after also starting the year on the injured list. He went 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA and was unable to return to the peak form he showed in 2022. This season, Manoah looked like one of the best pitchers in baseball, going 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA and finishing third in the American League Cy Young voting. He had a terrible season in 2023 (3-9, 5.87) and tried to get back to form this year.

He is only 26 years old and has a contract until 2027.

Lucas is a 27-year-old left-hander who debuted in 2023. He pitched for both the A’s and Tigers this year, posting a 1-0 record and a 10.29 ERA with both teams. He has made six Major League appearances so far this year.
