Toronto Blue Jays rookie continues historic pace on the way to starting his career

The Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays remain in last place in the American League East, and although they have played better recently, they are still planning for next year.

One of the guys trying to earn a spot in those 2025 plans is rookie Will Wagner, signed by the Jays at the trade deadline. He was acquired from Houston in the deal that brought Yusei Kikuchi to the Astros and has immediately made a historic impact.

According to @StatsCentre on social media:

Most total bases by a #BlueJays player in the first 7 away games of his career:
24 – Bo Bichette
20 – Will Wagner (through his home run and 2 doubles in today’s loss against BOS)
19 – Rowdy Tellez
18 – Adam Lind
17 – Lloyd Moseby
17- Davis Schneider
16- Junior Felix
16 – Brett Lawrie

Overall, Wagner, 26, has a .326 batting average with one home run and six RBIs this year. He has had just 43 at-bats. He will remain a rookie through the end of the 2024 season.

According to MLB.com, he is the 19th best prospect in the Jays system. The following is from his MLB.com profile:

Wagner doesn’t stand out for his skill, but he has an excellent approach and can reach all fields repeatedly with a compact left-handed swing. He doesn’t generate exciting exit velocities and produces too many grounders, but he does get on base repeatedly with hits and walks. He has some stealthy swing, including to opposite field, but probably won’t hit more than 12-15 home runs per season.

Will is the son of legendary closer Billy Wagner. In his 16-year career with the Astros, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves, he made 422 saves.
