Evil takes on new forms in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 and Sauron’s grip on Middle-earth grows stronger in the official season two trailer, giving a taste of a major event from the works of JRR Tolkien never seen on screen before.

The Rings of Power The Season 2 trailer suggests that the fall of Eregion could be the series’ first major battle, which is set to span multiple episodes. Ring forger Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) is left reeling as he is haunted by his connection to Sauron, who is disguised as Annatar, and Galadriel’s (Moryfdd Clark) violent reunion with the Dark Lord is revealed.

The Rings of Power Season 2 premieres Thursday, August 29 on Prime Video. Here’s a breakdown of the trailer and more details on the new season of the fantasy epic (you can see the previous trailer from San Diego Comic-Con here).

What happens in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2?

The Rings of Power takes place in the Second Age of Middle Earth, thousands of years before the action of The Lord of the RingsThe finale of the first season showed the creation of the three Elven Rings of Power. In the new season, many more rings will be created. One of them, a gift to the Dwarf King Durin (Peter Mullan), can apparently be seen in the trailer. Galadriel, Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) and Cirdan (Ben Daniels) will wear the Elven Rings.

Vickers’ Half-Edge was revealed to be the Dark Lord himself in the season one finale, which came out almost two years ago (October 2022). Now he succeeds in his attempt to bend Middle-earth to his will in the season that’s all about the villains.

“In season 2 of The Rings of Power, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel and without an army or allies, the aspiring Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power that will allow him to bend all the peoples of Middle-earth to his dark will,” the season two logline reads. “Building on the epic scope and ambition of the first season, the new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world increasingly on the brink of disaster. Elves and Dwarves, Orcs and Men, Wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are tested and kingdoms begin to crumble, the forces of goodwill fight ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters most to them… each other.”

As already mentioned in our Rings of Power Set Visit Coverage: The series’ first major battle will take place in the new installment, and it’s a story that will take several episodes to tell. Details of the battle have been kept top secret, but the August 14 trailer strongly suggests it will be the fall of Eregion, a major “historical” event in the Second Age of Middle-earth.

The battle known as the Sack of Eregion takes place in Tolkien’s works during the War of the Elves and Sauron. It is important not only because it marks the downfall of the Elven capital, but also because it ultimately leads to Elrond founding Rivendell.

What is the struggle that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Trailer for season 2?

“Eregion must not fall. That would be a fatal blow to all of Middle Earth,” Robert Aramayo’s Elrond says in the trailer above. But the city is besieged anyway, a development that is likely inextricably linked to the creation of more rings of power. Sauron is disguised as Annatar in Season 2, his “beautiful form” from Tolkien’s works, who was designed as an elf for the series, and Celebrimbor begins to question working with him in the new clips.

“What have you done to me?!” Celebrimbor screams in horror as a darker version of his face flashes in a mirror. In another gruesome moment, he is brutally trapped in branches as Galadriel looks on in horror. High King Gil-galad is heard saying, “Once the deceiver has gained a being’s trust, he gains the ability to shape its mind.” Could this shocking scene between Celebrimbor and Galadriel be a vision shaped by Sauron? He actually gained her trust in Season 1, a mistake that will cause Elrond to distrust Galadriel in Season 2.

In the trailer, the rings wreak havoc throughout Middle Earth, reminiscent of the warnings from The Lord of the Rings Movies that will look familiar to fans. Círdan is heard saying, “You are wise to fear these rings. In Sauron’s hands they could cause untold evil.” Sauron is then seen calmly walking through a fiery attack, Gil-Galad fending off Orcs, and Galadriel is captured by them before Adar (Sam Hazeldine, previously Joseph Mawle) warns, “Sooner or later, Sauron’s eye bores a hole. The rest of him slithers in.” Adar appears to offer Galadriel an alliance to destroy their mutual enemy, and Arondir (Ismael Cruz Cordova) is seen facing a giant from the Orc camp as the world burns around them. In the trailer’s final moments, Galadriel comes face to face with Sauron.

“Do you think you were the only one who came under my power?” Sauron asks. He then takes his crown and uses it as a weapon against Clark’s elf as they cross swords, and Galadriel looks equal parts angry, heartbroken, and frightened.

Who is in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Cast of season 2?

Rory Kinnear as Tom Bombadil and Daniel Weyman as the Stranger in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, Season 2

In addition to the stars listed above, there will be a number of new and returning characters this time around. Nazanin Boniadi has already announced that she will not be returning as Bronwyn, but Tyroe Muhafidin will return as her son Theo. The Stranger (Daniel Weyman), Nori (Markella Kavanagh) and Poppy (Megan Richards) will try to solve the mystery of his identity in the desert land of Rûhn, and Isildur (Maxim Baldry) will team up with Arondir and new character Estrid (Nia Towle).

In addition, Rory Kinnear will play Tom Bombadil, a popular book character who is making his screen debut. Also making their series debut are the hobbit-like creatures called Stoors. The leader of the Stoors, Gundabel, is played by Tanya Moodie. Gavi Singh Chera plays a Stoor named Merimac, according to Weekly entertainment. The Stoors are river people and Gollum/Smeagol is a descendant of their community. The Harfoots settled in the Shire, so consider Nori and Poppy the ancestors of Frodo and Sam (even though they are not directly related).

Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Sophia Nomvete, Owain Arthur, Peter Mullan, Trystan Gravelle, Ema Horvath, Lloyd Owen and Leon Wadham will also return for season 2. Other new cast members include Ciarán Hinds (seen in the new trailer with a long, black beard), Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Stuart Bowman, William Chubb, Kevin Eldon, Will Keen, Selina Lo, Calam Lynch, Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen “Zates” Atour, Amelia Kenworthy and Nicholas Woodeson. According to an alleged casting leak, Lynch will play Celeborn, Galadriel’s husband who she reportedly lost in season 1. But only time will tell if this rumor is true.
