Trump announces repeal of new EPA rule for power plants

Former President Trump promised on Monday that if he wins the presidential election, he will repeal a Biden-Harris administration regulation that limits carbon dioxide emissions from coal and natural gas power plants.

Trump made the remarks at an event in Pennsylvania and said he would support the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in April as this would have a negative impact on the US energy sector.

“I’m announcing today that when I return to the White House, I will end this anti-American energy crusade and repeal Kamala’s so-called power plant rule,” he said. “Kamala stands for energy waste and factory destruction. I stand for manufacturing dominance. Kamala is waging a regulatory jihad to shut down power plants across America.”

“This is a disaster for our country,” Trump said. “Instead of closing power plants, we’re going to open dozens and dozens of new ones, and we’re going to do it fast.”

The EPA rule would require existing coal-fired power plants that are expected to remain in operation long-term and new natural gas-fired power plants to account for 90% of CO2 emissions until 2032.

The agency says its forecast of regulatory impacts resulted in a reduction in carbon emissions of 1.38 billion tons by 2047 and “net climate and public health benefits of $370 billion over the next two decades.”

A federal appeals court denied a group of Republican-led states’ request for an emergency stay to pause implementation of the rule while the court case continues. The court ruled that a pause was unnecessary because the rule’s earliest implementation deadline is 2030.

These states appealed against the ruling to the Supreme Court and argue that the EPA exceeded its authority by pushing forward the rule, which they say requires congressional approval. Industry associations representing electric utilities and the mining and coal industries have also filed lawsuits challenging the rule.

Phil Flynn, a FOX Business Network contributor and senior account manager at Price Futures Group, said in an interview that the EPA Rule If ultimately implemented, it would place a strain on the US energy system.

“Even though the environmentalists will say, ‘This is great for the environment. It’s a great thing.’ It’s not going to be a great thing for the economy because power plants are going to be shut down,” he explained. The power grid is going to become more unstable than it already is and it’s going to cause blackouts.”

“The other problem I’ve had is that they don’t really distinguish between natural gas and coal-fired power plants because natural gas is so much cleaner than coal. It’s almost like they’re comparing apples to oranges and not recognizing that record natural gas production has reduced coal use and allowed us to keep the lights on,” Flynn added.
