“Twins who feel each other’s pain. A hunt for dangerous fanatics in a world where logic is the most important thing,” that is “Color of Ash”.

“Color of Ashes“” is the second novel by local fantasy author Abigail Wilkes. On July 21, the Hot Sulphur Springs-based author held a book launch at the Rocky Mountain Roastery in Granby.

“With the publication of my second book, I finally feel like a real author,” Wilkes said at the book launch. “It’s fun to see two books on the shelf instead of just one and to know there are more to come. I really like it and I’m glad it’s out.”

Wilkes entered the world of fantasy writing with “Seconds”

Wilkes published her debut novel, Seconds, in 2021. The young adult fantasy novel tells the story of Miki, who must adopt an alternate identity to survive in a society where second-borns are ostracized. Miki is not only a second-born, but a fifth-born, which makes her even more dangerous in the eyes of the law.

While promoting her first book and continuing to write, Wilkes met a number of authors in Grand County.

“I find it amazing how many talented writers we have here, even though it is such a small community,” she said.

Synopsis of “Color of Ash”

“Leewana can feel her brother’s pain and Pan is constantly hurt.

The twins’ bond – and their choice of different sects – challenges the foundations of their deeply divided society, where one must choose between following a philosophy or one’s free will. Leewana would tear down mountains to protect her brother from rumors of dangerous heretics circulating in the city, but when real evidence emerges, her ongoing mission to escape her past and protect Pan becomes nearly impossible.

It wouldn’t help Pan to tell his sister that he feels her pain too, but not in the same way… or that he is associated with the very heretics responsible for her parents’ deaths.”
