The Airbus A320 left Corfu Airport in Greece shortly before 1 p.m. local time and headed for Gatwick.

Just twenty minutes later, the flight was hit by turbulence at a speed of almost 800 kilometers per hour.

The two injured were flight attendants who were serving food to the passengers when the chaos broke out.

They were thrown against the walls of the plane and suffered such severe injuries that the pilots decided to leave the jet on the ground.

The crew made an emergency landing at Fiumicino Airport in Rome, where the two flight attendants received medical treatment.

An EasyJet spokeswoman said: “The flight on 19 August experienced turbulence which unfortunately resulted in injuries to two members of the cabin crew.”

“The captain then decided to divert the flight to Rome, where the flight attendants received medical treatment.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet’s top priority and our pilots are trained to deal with turbulence.”

There were around 181 people on board the plane.

The Italian aviation safety authority ANSV has launched an investigation into the incident, reports the Daily Mail.
