At the San Diego Comic-Con last month, we learned that the West Coast Avengers will return this November in a new ongoing series from Marvel superstar Gerry Duggan and acclaimed artist Danny Kim.
Today, you can get a closer look at this bold new lineup with must-see variant covers for the first issue, including pieces by Jeehyung Lee, Gerardo Sandoval, and series artist Danny Kim.
This iconic version of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will launch in time for the title’s 40th anniversary. After Duggan’s run on Invincible Iron ManThe series begins with Tony Stark assembling a new team consisting of War Machine, Jessica Drew, also known as Spider-Woman, Firestar, whom Duggan met in the pages of X-Men; and a mysteriously redeemed Ultron.

ULTRON RETURNS…REDEEMED? Iron Man and War Machine have assembled a new Avengers team – one that includes villains looking for redemption. Their case study? Ultron – who, against all odds, seems to be on the right path… at least for now. But does the success of one guarantee the success of all? Spider-Woman and Firestar have their doubts. And can Ultron really be redeemed from his past by any heroic act?
“I’ve been thinking about redemption this year and we’ll see who can be made redemption on the West Coast,” Duggan teased. “It’s a fun action story, but also an Ultron story – and one of my biggest Marvel swings yet.”
“I previously had the pleasure of writing a pretty great Ultron horror story with Pym’s face, and this is a very different story featuring one of my favorite Marvel characters in one of my favorite legacy titles in the city that has been my home for so long,” continued the author. “Wait until you see what Danny Kim is up to. Find redemption in the City of Angels in November.”
We’re definitely excited to see where this story goes, especially since it’s surely inevitable that Ultron will eventually turn evil and show his true colors…or not! After decades of being a villain, now might be a good time to guide him down the path of heroism.
