USA ‘deeply concerned’ after players subjected to online racist abuse following Panama loss

The United States Soccer Federation expressed its “deep concern” after confirming that several players were subjected to racist abuse online following the U.S. men’s team’s surprise loss to Panama at the Copa America.

Gregg Berhalter’s hosts suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat in their second Group C match at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday night after former Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun’s opening goal was cancelled out by strikes from Cesar Blackman and Jose Fajardo.

For the USA, Tim Weah received an early red card after he pushed Panamanian defender Roderick Miller in the back of the head. For the winners, Adalberto Carrasquilla was sent off shortly before the end for a reckless challenge on Christian Pulisic.

Weah and Balogun, along with Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, are said to have been the target of disgusting racist abuse on social media after the game.

The U.S. Soccer Federation immediately condemned this abhorrent behavior and offered support to its players.

“US Soccer is aware of and deeply concerned about the racist comments online directed at several players on our men’s national team following today’s game,” the statement said.

“There is absolutely no place for such hateful and discriminatory behavior in the game. These actions are not only unacceptable, but also violate the values of respect and inclusivity that we uphold as an organization.

“US Soccer stands firmly against racism in any form and will continue to support our players.”

Thursday’s loss leaves the United States in second place in Group C of the Copa America tournament, level on points with Panama, but with the better goal difference after their 2-0 opening win over Bolivia last weekend in Texas.

They are three points behind leaders Uruguay, who they face on Monday night in Kansas City, Missouri. The USA must repeat Panama’s result against Bolivia in Orlando to advance to the quarterfinals.
