Virgin Atlantic orders seven new aircraft to completely overhaul its fleet

Virgin Atlantic has announced a new aircraft order that completes its multi-billion dollar fleet transformation.

The airline said it had ordered seven new Airbus A330-900s, to be delivered from 2027.

The airline now has a total of 19 A330neo aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic did not disclose the value of the contract but said the airline would use the new A330-900s to replace the A330-300s it took delivery of in 2011.

The new aircraft are designed to be 13 percent more fuel efficient.

Chief Executive Shai Weiss said: “Today we complete the multi-billion dollar transformation of our fleet with the purchase of seven more A330-900s that we know our customers and employees love to fly.

“Flying with the youngest fleet is the most readily available and important lever for decarbonising long-haul air travel and we are proud to operate one of the youngest and most fuel and carbon efficient fleets across the Atlantic.”

He added that while Airbus was not “first to the party” – Virgin Atlantic’s first planes were built by Boeing – it was “our most important dance partner”.

By 2028, Virgin Atlantic plans to operate 45 aircraft, including 19 A330-900s, 12 A350-1000s and 14 Boeing 787-9s with an average age of 6.4 years.
